The 4th Annual Middle School Thanksgiving classic was in full effect this past weekend. Dameon Key and the Lineage of Champions put on a great event to jumpstart the middle school season in Richmond County. There was a total of 23 teams (boys and girls) with schools coming from Augusta, South Carolina and the outskirts of Richmond county. Day 1 Friday November 27th
North Augusta Yellow Jackets vs Tutt Dragons (boys)
From the start of the game North Augusta showed their dominance on the court. The Yellow Jackets are anchored by 6’1 SF Jashawn Brooks. Brooks, who is just a seventh grader, displayed his inside presence with multiple block shots, put backs, and slap-the-glass lay ins. The supporting cast of #20 Dale Young, #4 Keyon West and #3 Christian Davis helped the yellow jackets to a 42-18 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Tutt continued to play hard throughout the course of the game, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the offensive attack of North Augusta. The Dragons were without 6’0 seventh grader Quinton Phillips which would have helped out in the frontcourt for the Dragons. Tutt was lead by #25 Tyquan Burns (Tutt) with 10 points and #22 Nick Fortenberry (Tutt) with 8pts. Jashawn (North Augusta) led all scorers with 22points. Final Score: North Augusta 44 Tutt 24.
Sego Falcons vs New Ellington
The first game for the defending champions, Sego Falcons, featured a game against South Carolina squad New Ellington. Sego has basically a new squad with only one key player coming back in PG #5 Dante Coleman (sego). Both teams were evenly matched with the score going back and forth all the way up to the fourth quarter. The score was tied 25 to 25 with a 1:30 left in the fourth. #10 PF Jaylon Lawrence (New Ellington) scored on a lay-in putting New Ellington up two. Sego couldn’t capitalize on two jump-shots and New Ellington secured the rebound. Jaylon iced the game with two consecutive free throws making the score 29-25. Coach Kenny (New Ellington) credited his team’s execution on ball handling late in the fourth for the win. #25 W. Yarbrough (sego) led his team with 12 points. #3 PG Darius Washington (new Ellington) added 6 points and 4 assist. Jaylon (New Ellington) led all scorers with 18 points. Final Score: New Ellington 29- Sego 25.
Morgan Road Mustangs vs Swainsboro
The game between Morgan Rd and Swainsboro was the closest game of the evening. Both teams came out with a great defensive effort. #3 PG Earl Cobb (Morgan rd) anchored the mustang’s defense that lead to some key steals which converted to lay-ups. #20 PG J. Strawbridge (Swainsboro) dished out some nice passes that lead to easy baskets for his team in the first half. The game got interesting late in the fourth with a 1:05 left with the score being Morgan Rd 31 Swainsboro 28. #55 J. Davis (Swainsboro) hit an And-1 but couldn’t make the free throw to tie the game at 31. #20 J. Strawbridge stole the ball with 40 seconds left and Swainsboro had 3 opportunities to score at the basket but couldn’t prevail. #45 T. Thomas (Swainsboro) led all scorers with 16. #20 J. Strawbridge added 6 points and 5 assist. #8 Desmond Dunn led Morgan rd with 13 points. Final Score: Morgan Rd 31 Swainsboro 30.
Murphey Mavericks vs Spirt Creek Dolphins
Another close game was between Murphey and Spirit Creek. The game was very fast paced and physical in where both teams used various presses and man-to-man defenses to go at each other. #22 SF Danny Demmons (murphey) displayed two spectacular blocks in the 1st half, while #12 SG Josh Toliver (Spirit Creek) carried the dolphins in the first half, even sinking in a 3pt buzzer beater at the end of the third to make the score 30 to 30. Murphey pulled away early in the fourth quarter. Murphey has one of the deepest benches in the city and the mavericks used that to their advantage by runninng-and-gunning and wearing down the Spirit Creek defense. #12 Josh Toliver 16 points and #33 Vincent Norris 15 points led Sprit Creek. #22 Danny Demmons led murphey with 16 points. #3 Jaylon Daniels (murphey) added in 4 points and 5 assist and played very well for the mavericks at the pointguard position. Final Score: Murphey 46 Spirit Creek 37.
Langford Lions vs T.J. Elder
The 1st of the two headliner games featured the Langford Lions and T. J. Elder. Langford features one of the best backcourts in the CSRA in PG Malcolm Quaterman (who didn’t play) and #12 SG Juwan Tolbert. T.J. Elder also featured good guard play in #23 PG Manquez Williams and #20 M. Miller. Both teams went back and forth throughout the game, but #23 Manquez couldn’t really get into a rhythm when Langord switched to thier 2-3 zone. The Lions seemed as if they had control over the whole game, in where the team took the lead early in the first quarter and never trailed. Langford got steady pointguard play from #10 Tony “tiger” Daggett and PF #24 Frank Roberts who led the team with 8 points. Langford displayed a well balanced offensive attack and played solid halfcourt defense. T.J. Elder was led by #20 M. Miller with 14 points. Final Score: Langford 39 T.J. Elder 32
Glenn Hills Spartans vs Oak Hill
The night cap featured Glenn Hills and the perinneal Oak Hill. The Spartans which features 5 players that were rated in the top ten at the Nexlevelsports Middle School Elite Showcase, are the preseason favorites to take home the city title. Glenn Hills was matchup against a Oak Hill squad that is known to be pretty tough. Glenn Hills showed everyone why they are the preseason favorites by jumping off to a 18 to 4 first quarter lead. Glenn Hills showed there dominance on both sides of the ball by playing aggressive man-to-man defense that lead to turnovers and easy lay-ups. Oak Hill continued to play tough but couldn’t get into their offensive rhythm. They were lead by #13 Trawick (oak hill). Glenn Hills was lead by #23 PG Michael “meat” Scott and #13 Aaron Williamson who both had 10 points.
Final Score: Glenn Hills 51 Oak Hill 13.
Day 2 Saturday November 28
Glenn Hills Spartans vs Langford Lions (Girls)
We got the chance to check out some girls action this matchup featured a rivalry game between the Glenn Hills Spartans and the Langford Lions. This was a physical matchup in where both teams were scrapping on the floor for loose balls, hard fouls and grinding out defense. The score was 15 to 12 at half time with Langford in the lead. The game was going back and forth all the way up until 2:16 left in the fourth quarter. Langford capitalized on a steal and a lay-up that put the lady lions up four with 40 seconds left in the game. Glenn Hills had several oppurtunities to score put couldn’t capitalize.
Final score: Langford 36 Glenn Hills 32
Pine Hill vs Tutt (boys)
This game featured 1st year school in Pine Hill. The game was a defensive effort especially with Tutt’s center #34 Quinton Phillips who had two blocks in the first half. The second half, the game started to pick up. Tutt got a huge spark from six grade pointguard #11 J’zwa Collier. He finished with 4 points and added in 3 assist and made some key passes that lead to scores. #23 SG Pinehill was the offensive threat for his squad. He finished the game with 14 points. #22 Nick Fortenberry ( tutt) iced the game with a corner 3pt shot that put Tutt up by 10 points late in fourth quarter. Final score: Tutt 27 Pine Hill 21
